Enterprise software and IT systems have traditionally been a bastion of Large organizations with a multi-million dollar IT spends every year. Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) have evolved over the years to capitalize on this huge IT spend. As the demand for Software plateaus out across the globe, the ISVs have invented ingenuous methods to keep their prices high very often by changing their licensing models. As a result, the licensing costs of Commercial Software products from Tier#1 vendors have been beyond reach of Small and Medium enterprises.
Even the large enterprises are finding it difficult to sustain these costs, as their user base expands and the pressure on cost reduction increases.
Many smaller ISVs have emerged over the years and some of them have come out with very impressive products. Open source community has been consolidating their offerings all these years and we have very mature and stable products available from open source stable.
There is increasing interest from SME segment to harness the power of open source products for their Line of Business applications.Even larger enterprise are seriously looking at Open source ecosystem either to replace or augment their existing COTS product stack.Support on the Open source community driven software has always been achilles heel of these products, but over the year many companies have emerged who address this concern by providing enterprise class support on such products.
